Kitesurfing at Tobago Surfcamp

Tobago is a paradise for water sports. Tobago is a small tranquil island in the Caribbean, which is still quite unknown to a lot of people. Tobago is the dream location for any kite-surfer.  The island has an Atlantic and a Caribbean Coast, which allows any kite-surfer of any style to find the right spot. Our Surf Camp offers everything a true kite-surfer could dream of.

Tobago offers two beaches for kite-surfing: Pigeon Point and Lowlands Beach.
Pigeon Point is situated at the south end of the island. The water is shallow, even more at low tide, where you can stand in the water for several hundred meters off the shore. The beach at Pigeon Point is long and wide and offers enough space for beginners and advanced kite-surfers.

Lowlands Beach is ideal for kite-surfing at low tide. It is located at the Atlantic Coast and therefore the waves are normal, 80 % of the time the wind comes in from the east side-onshore. Lowlands Beach is perfect for advanced kite-surfers, the best jumps you can find.

With a car rental or the Surf Camp Shuttle Service, these two beaches are only a 5 minutes drive away from the Tobago Surf Camp.

Starting from the end of September to the end of May, Tobago offers a very reliable and constant wind (side-onshore).  During this time,12qm – 14qm kites are used.  In the months of June to September, 14qm – 17qm kites are ideal.

An off-shore reef is situated 300m off  Pigeon Point, therefore the water is very shallow inside this bay, which makes this location ideal for beginners. You can improve your skills on and behind the reef, the waves are between 0.5 – 2m. The water temperature is between 27 – 29C all year, which means, there is no need for a shorty. What you do need, because of Tobago’s location close to the equator, is good protection from the strong rays of the sun with sun-blockers and a lycra.

For the very special kite experience, the “down-winder”, you can hire a boat transfer (taxi) to take you to the outskirts of the Buccoo reef. There you will start at a sand bank, the Nylon Pool, with speed you will kite back to the beach of Pigeon Point.

In case of low winds, no reason to be upset, there is always a Plan B

History of kitesurfing

The kite is similar to the paraglide. In the mid 80’s a Frenchman developed an inflatable tube kite to use as a method of transport on the water. Like a sail, the kite has forces to create forward motion and lift.  The ability to start the kite after crashing into the water without the help of a second person, opened new opportunities in the field of water sports. Unfortunately nobody really paid attention to those findings, only some pioneers continued to develop Kite-Surfing and Kite-Boarding.

Kite-Surfing made news again when Robby Naish, a world-known Wind-Surfer, bought the Frenchman’s patent and developed and produced his own kites. The increasing trend of Kite-Surfing led to the 1999 foundation of a world-wide association, which held World Cup Championships and Races. The industry picked up on the market, new innovative companies are now establishing.

The new trend of kite-surfing is very successful in America, Hawaii, France and now in the Caribbean. The kite is multi-functional in the water and on land. Simple paragliding is already a lot of fun, but adding roller blades or a special skate board to your feet, or with a buggy board at the beach, or with a surf board in the water – it turns into a challenge and a new extreme sport.

The kite has even been used on ice and snow. Endless new possibilities in the field of fun sports have been created with the use of the kite.
